About this album…
The album “The Witchfinder” is based on the true story of Matthew Hopkins, the self-proclaimed “Witch Finder”, who terrorised parts of England during the time of the English Civil War in the Seventeenth Century. Hopkins and his cohort, John Stearne, toured East Anglia and beyond, identifying supposed witches and presenting them to the local magistrates for trial, citing the “Witchcraft Act” of 1542, hence the title of the second track on the album. Many innocent women were ultimately sent to the gallows by Hopkins and Stearne and Hopkins often received a substantial amount of money for his foul work. The album, although almost exclusively instrumental, aims to reflect the time of Hopkins and his horrible deeds; Peter uses a Bodhran, Mandolin and various other instruments in order to create atmospheric musical pieces which evoke the music of the era, whilst at the same time using modern instrumentation to create an unusual, multi-layered and thought-provoking progressive rock album with traditional 17th Century music interspersed throughout.
